“Smashing Grandpa” rock couture clothing line was founded by Leslie Gardner, a N.Y.C native who began designing for glam rock brands in the late 80’s. After working as a stylist for numerous music videos, MTV, teen magazines, and Playboy, Leslie was artistically inspired. Soon after, she designed the infamous red-lipped Mick Jagger tee and since then, Smashing Grandpa has evolved into a full line.
Smashing Grandpa clothing is known for its elegant
synthesis of feminine girly shyness and edgy graphics. Stylistically,
the designs of Smashing Grandpa are comparable
to classic punk rock designs such as those of Vivienne Westwood and Betsey
Johnson, combined with the inspiration of the new-school authenticity
of Harajuku street wear. Design aesthetics have been compared to L.A.M.B
and Libertine. It’s Los Angeles by way of London!
Smashing Grandpa currently has showrooms in
Los Angeles, New York, London, and Canada, retailing in over 200 boutiques,
with specialty and department stores world wide. Some popular retailers
now include Macy’s, Barney’s New York, Fred Segal, Lisa Klein,
Harrod’s England, Vault 28, and Anthropology.
Since its inception in 1995, many popular celebrities including Jessica
Simpson, Nicole Richie, Madonna, Kelly Clarkson, Ron Wood, and Gweneth
Paltrow, Courtney Love, Kelly Osborne, and Victoria Beckham have become
avid fans of the line and have been seen wearing Smashing
Grandpa on countless occasions.
